What’s special about iBuildBridges?

The usual musical opportunities are to play for an ensemble, or take music classes, or buy these books and learn how to teach music. I was interested in the connection factor; iBuildBridges is a place where I can use arts and music to foster community.

What are your musical influences?

It definitely started with my family. Ever since my grandma sat me down on her piano, I knew that music would always be part of my life.

In terms of my songwriting, I’m influenced by Rebecca Sugar. Her music makes me feel happy and comforted. I like the calming energy of Phum Viphurit, Mitski, Liana Flores, and Dodie. Sometimes I want things to be perfect, and I tend to freeze up. Something about Mitski is like, just grab a guitar and play, you know? So I try my best to keep things rolling by just playing and sharing.

What have you learned about bringing people together?

Show up for one another, especially in creative things. We tend to lean towards competition, right? We feel like we have to be better than the other person. It’s not always a competition. If we show up for each other and support each other in our goals, as a whole community and beyond, we can rise and thrive together.
