At the core of the iBuildBridges mission is the belief that music can shine a light on the darkest chapters of history, turning stories of struggle into anthems of hope. “Canta Mariposa” (Sing, Butterfly) is a hauntingly beautiful example of this power. Originally composed by our Musical Director, Eduardo Mendonça, for the play In the Time of the Butterflies, this piece serves as a tribute to the Mirabal sisters — three courageous women who stood in resistance against the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic.

The song is a musical monument to courage. By reflecting on the Mirbal sisters’ legacy, our musicians perform a composition navigating the delicate balance between historical oppression and the unyielding human spirit. “Canta Mariposa” doesn’t just look backward; it connects the bravery of the past with the justice movements of today, demonstrating how the “song” of a butterfly, though seemingly fragile, can eventually bring down a wall of silence. 

Musically, the piece is a sophisticated exploration of Latin and Jazz influences. Arranged in the evocative key of G Minor at a steady 106 BPM, it creates a palpable sense of tension and release. The flute and electric violin soar like the song’s namesake over a complex rhythmic foundation of acoustic guitar and percussion, while the keyboard and bass add a driving layer of depth. The result is a soundscape that feels both moving and deeply personal, capturing the fluttering heartbeat of resistance.
