Collective Compositions: American Soil
Roots and Growth: The Journey of "American Soil"
Every iBuildBridges performance is a search for common ground. “American Soil,” takes that mission on a literal journey across the map. This expansive arrangement by Eduardo Mendonça traces the complex, beautiful, and often challenging musical heritage of this land — proving that our diversity is not a division, but our greatest strength.
“Sing and don't cry, because singing rejoices, pretty little heaven, our hearts.”
“American Soil” is a sonic pilgrimage. It begins with the grounding pulse of an Indigenous drumbeat, honoring the first voices of this land, before flowing into the soulful depths of Black American gospel. From there, the melody travels to the mountains of Mexico with “Cielito Lindo” and across the Pacific to Hawaii with Queen Lili’uokalani’s tender “Aloha ‘Oe.” After a stop in Puerto Rico to hear the song “El Coqui” and a detour through the brassy streets of New Orleans, the piece culminates in Woody Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land.”
“Dearest one, yes, you are mine own. From you, true love shall never depart.”
Musically, the piece is a masterclass in Folk fusion, anchored in the open, hopeful key of C Major at a contemplative 62 BPM. This slower tempo allows the listener to absorb the shifting textures of a truly diverse ensemble. The trumpet and flute trade leads, while the violin and piano provide a lush harmonic backdrop. Supported by bass, guitar, drums, and the bright rattle of tambourines, it's a living history book — each instrument acting as a chapter of the American story.
“As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking: Is this land made for you and me?”
The story of “American Soil” lies in its evolution. It doesn’t shy away from the shadows, and ultimately moves toward a place of inclusion. By weaving these disparate traditions into a cohesive work, we demonstrate that while origins may be different, we all walk the same “ribbon of highway.” When we sing that this land was made for you and me, we aren’t just reciting lyrics; we’re making a promise.
